Strategy of tension

by Lorenzo Piccoli

You can like them or not, but an attack which is carried at the core of the governing institutions of a country is always quite shocking. This is why some people are suggesting that today’s shooting is part of a deliberate strategy to control the discontent, divide and manipulate public opinion.

Even though I do not believe this being the case, historically it happened. Quite often too, especially in Italy, where the strategy of tension was an inherent part of the period between the 1970s and the 1980s. This is yet another reason why people are so nervous about what happened today. The other reason why this one shooting carries such an high symbolical value is that never before had a terrorist attack being carried out at such a short distance from the main governing institutions of the Italian Republic.
